Ideas worth building, funded.

A private New Zealand fund lending up to NZD $100,000 against the project itself, with no personal guarantee.

Tasman Bay, Nelson

Up to NZD $100,000, structured one project at a time.

NZD $100,000 is the most any one project can ask for, and is also the total Wing lends in a year. An individually structured loan, not a government grant. Interest accrues from day one on drawn funds, released against pre-agreed milestones. Timeframes are typical, not guaranteed, and all terms sit in the binding agreement.

01Is Wing the right fit?

Three questions before you read anything else.

A guide, not an assessment. Nothing you answer here is stored or sent. If it points to an application, there is no fee to apply.

  • Field. Primary health, renewable energy or waste management.
  • Stage. Wing comes in from proof of concept, not an idea or research still underway.
  • Use of funds. R&D, production line, or marketing once a product is ready. Not overheads, rent, utilities or accounting.

02How funding works

A loan, not a grant.

Illustrative. Wing agrees the number and timing of milestones with each project, and this is not a published schedule.

03What we fund

Three fields. Nothing outside them.

Development, production and market readiness in the three fields Wing supports. Projects outside them are not funded, whatever their merit.

Focus 01Primary Health

Diagnostics, devices, treatment and care delivery that improve outcomes at the front line.

Health ethics approval may be required
Focus 02Renewable Energy

Generation, storage and efficiency work that moves New Zealand energy use further from carbon.

Environmental consents may be required
Focus 03Waste Management

Recovery, reuse and minimisation that keeps material, and the value in it, out of landfill.

Feasibility evidence strengthens an application

What the money can go on

Eligible in any of the three fields.

  • 01End-stage research
  • 02Prototype production and testing
  • 03Market and feasibility work
  • 04Production line setup
  • 05Fixed-term wages tied to a funded outcome
  • 06Regulatory approval, where it is likely to be granted
  • 07Marketing and sales, once there is a marketable product

What it cannot

What the loan does not cover.

  • -Overheads
  • -Administration
  • -Rent
  • -Utilities
  • -Accounting

Please note that Wing R&D Fund does not offer mentoring, investor/collaborator introductions, or workshops. The money, the milestones and a human reviewer are the whole offer.

04Readiness

We come in after the idea.

Mature research, a proof of concept that works, some technical validation. The point where production needs capital.

Stage 01

Research

Mature research underway, findings taking shape.

Stage 02, Wing funds from here

Proof of concept

A prototype, or equivalent, that demonstrably works.

Stage 03

Technical validation

Evidence, in field or independent, that it holds up.

Stage 04

Production

End-stage research, production setup, market entry.

05If it goes wrong

The downside, stated plainly.

The questions a founder actually asks before borrowing against their own research.

No personal guarantee

The project is the collateral: the end product of the research and the assets involved in it.

You keep the intellectual property

You own the IP you develop. Wing holds it as security and releases it once the loan is repaid in full.

If the project does not reach market

Wing liquidates what it can and writes off the rest.

If the schedule slips

Terms can be renegotiated. Restructuring, hardship provisions and extended terms are negotiable case by case. Early repayment carries no penalty.

In default

Wing has the right to use debt collectors.
